Why WordPress?

Plenty of you are going to be surprised to see me moving the Journal to this platform. Some of you have argued for it for years, others probably never knew that the Journal existed in it’s original format (which will still exist here).

To the left - that's what I do to make the old Journal work, and to the right - the old Journal... and then there's a couple of books that are the last remaining old Little Black Books
To the left – that’s what I do to make the old Journal work, and to the right – the old Journal… and then there’s a couple of books that are the last remaining old Little Black Books.

For a long long time I tried to make the Journal resemble the little black books – the physical journals I kept for years – but since it’s inception the innate limitations of the format have become more and more exhausting. Whether it’s the text formatting that never QUITE leaves things where I thought I put them, or the fact that screen sizes have changed over the years requiring interesting and massive revisions, or simply the fact that in this format I won’t have to dumb down the pictures nearly as much – I think one of the most major changes will simply be accessibility and searchability, and yes – the long-demanded return of COMMENTABILITY!

Though I’m sure I will lament the sheer MASSIVENESS of the project I’ve embarked upon (the transferring of over 4,000 pages of content to a new format) and I’ll kind of miss the firm control over the format (though of course, what with CSS changes and browser conversions and my own refusal to become a better coder, that’s kind of an exaggeration) – I think it’s far better to start on this NOW and give in to the tides of change, even if I’m quite literally over a decade late to the party.

The old Journal was a hand-coded labour of Love, but I think it’s time for me to finally suck it up… and blog about it.

I hope you enjoy!
