Tonight's Lairguest, Rebecca Berlin, isn't someone I know very well. She'd frequented the VOM and I'd caught rumour of a new-to-us artist that was becoming a regular who had an impressive voice and good songwriting chops - a songwriter and storyteller that was a welcome addition to the community.
Then Rebecca started coming out to the Tuesday night Spark. There's something about her that reminds me of my very, very first introduction to a present, in-person singer/songwriter. An honesty and transparency, coupled with a voice that flutes over guitar or piano telling stories that don't feel affected. They feel true.
As songwriters we often bend our tales for palatability or simply for the rhyme. We hide ourselves just enough in our songs to maintain our armour. There's a vulnerability in Rebecca's songwriting that reminds me that our REAL power as artists is in our ability to lay our emotions bare and still sing strong.
See you tonight. |
