We’re headed out 70 to West Virginia, as we’re wont to do. It sounds like we’ll get thunderstorms later in the day, and though we’re playing outside earlier, I think we’ll be missed just fine. If we’re REALLY lucky they’ll hold off till we’ve loaded in at Skipper’s Dips – and if we’re really, REALLY lucky they’ll be done by the time we’re loading out again.
The year’s gone by stupid fast – possibly this is just a side effect of getting older, or maybe it’s simply how the summer came together – with most of the spring and beginning of summer given over to Falcon Ridge and preparing for it, the FRFF preview tour, etc – it was like once Falcon Ridge was over the rest of the year just sprang out of nowhere.
We got into the studio to sort of kick off the new CD yesterday and it wasn’t nearly as well-planned as I’m used to it being. I guess it sort of falls into the category as so much right now: i.e. it snuck up on me. Still, once we finally got there, and then got into the swing of things I found working with Steve Steckler of Asparagus Media pretty pleasant. He adapted swiftly to how I wanted to work and is fast on his board. His equipment is nice and though the sound on my guitar at the moment is kind of hollow, I point more to the fact that it’s an unmixed audio with perhaps more of the room sound than I’d generally use.
And so a new CD – for which I don’t have nearly enough material written and for which I’m worried about finances – we’ve just not planned it very well (so far) and I must admit I’ve been dragging m y heels precisely BECAUSE I haven’t been writing… but even just 3 hours in the studio have made me hungry for it. I do Love the process, I Love watching things fit together, I Love the idea of creation – and for as much as I Love recording things at home – there’s a LOT to be said for the sheer clarity and ease of having higher-end gear and a more-experienced ear.
Heather writes like a beast. Meanwhile, I feel like I’ve lost my muse.
