Sponsored in conjunction with Institute of Musical Traditions and School of Musical Traditions at SMT’s new lesson space in Takoma Park, we’ve got a small room for performances and we’re not afraid to use it. This is NOT a restaurant so bring your own food or drink if you want to eat or drink! (no alcohol please, and of course please clean up after yourself). House keyboard in the house. The evening is free, but we DO pass the hat for our featured artist.

Tonight we have featured artist Robert Lighthouse. Always a delight, and a player who admire HUGELY. Most recently Robert’s just returned from Ukraine where he’s been performing and giving hope where otherwise there might be none. We encourage everyone to stick around after the show to chat with Robert about his experience.

Robert Lighthouse, a native of Sweden, first came to the United States at the age of 18, determined to learn more about the music he loves – Mississippi Delta Blues. For eight years he traveled around the country visiting blues Meccas like Chicago’s famed Maxwell Street and New Orleans, the cradle of the blues. He settled in Washington, DC in 1988 and established a cult following as a street musician. He toured Belgium and Holland with the Charlie Sayles Band and then landed his own steady gig at City Blues Cafe in D.C.

We’re not big enough for amps or drumkits, so don’t bring’em. 2 songs, 10 minutes, 1 pun – whichever’s shorter. Webcasting Live on Facebook.com/robsopenmics, YouTube.com/robsopenmics and Twitch.tv/ilyaimy.

*Wuzza Takoma Spark you might ask? Dave Eisner has chosen to commemorate an arts collective we used to have here in Takoma Park by naming this NEW performance space at School of Musical Traditions after our sadly-departed Rob Nicholson’s strange and wonderful gatherings. Takoma Spark – to spark creativity and inspiration into a warm and inviting, roaring (but ne’r searing) open flame!
