TONIGHT w featured artist Lydia Sylvia Martin!

Lydia Sylvia Martin is an old time banjo player and also writes original music. After playing in a family band and learning from traditional music mentors, she now teaches, records, and performs regularly. In 2023 she was awarded the Maryland State Arts Council traditional arts apprenticeship as a Master Artist. She has performed in the United States, England and Ireland, and has been invited to teach and present workshops and concerts at traditional music gatherings such as Common Ground on the Hill, Miles of Music, the Washington Folk Festival and many more. She studied at the Levine School of Music and at Goucher College, where she also earned an MFA in writing.

“Lydia is a wonderful banjo player with depth and technical expertise. Her unaffected singing is beautiful as well.”–Tony Trischka

We’re not big enough for amps or drumkits, so don’t bring’em. 2 songs, 10 minutes, 1 pun – whichever’s shorter. Webcasting Live on Facebook.com/robsopenmics, YouTube.com/robsopenmics and Twitch.tv/ilyaimy.

*Wuzza Takoma Spark you might ask? Dave Eisner has chosen to commemorate an arts collective we used to have here in Takoma Park by naming this NEW performance space at School of Musical Traditions after our sadly-departed Rob Nicholson’s strange and wonderful gatherings. Takoma Spark – to spark creativity and inspiration into a warm and inviting, roaring (but ne’r searing) open flame!
