TONIGHT w featured artist Ivy N Ash: Brothers Rick Ivy and Whalen Nash have been playing music together for over 40 years. Their tight blood harmonies conjure prior fraternal duos like the Louvins, the Stanleys, the Everlys, and perhaps most significantly, the Smothers Brothers, whom they consciously try to emulate. Rick and Whalen like to refer to their music as “Weird Grass,” a term they feel will be increasingly applied to the hybrid melange of country, folk, bluegrass, rockabilly, blues and other forms of Americana currently prospering on the shady back porches of shotgun shacks in tiny towns between Baltimore, Maryland and Austin, Texas. Ivy N ash create original songs with inventive lyrics and exhilarating instrumentation that sound both oddly familiar and distinctly different–a unique contribution to the tradition of folk brother duos.

Sponsored in conjunction with Institute of Musical Traditions AT School of Musical Traditions, down the street from HOUSE of Musical Traditions, this is a rare thing : a small LISTENING ROOM open mic. The evening is free, but every night we have a featured artist and we hope that you can support them by tipping or purchasing merch!
This is NOT a restaurant so bring your own food or NON-ALCOHOLIC* drink if you want to eat or drink! We have some snacks and drinks available for a reasonable donation. We have a house keyboard, but it’s a small space, unable to support acts larger than a quartet, and no drumkits. 2 songs, 10 minutes, 1 pun – whichever’s shorter. After 10pm we switch to just one song as we are victims of our own success!
We webcast Live on Facebook.com/robsopenmics, YouTube.com/robsopenmics and Twitch.tv/robilyaimy
*This is a school and alcohol is absolutely prohibited donchaknow!
