Sponsored in conjunction with Institute of Musical Traditions AT School of Musical Traditions, down the street from HOUSE of Musical Traditions, this is a rare thing : a small LISTENING ROOM open mic. The evening is free, but every night we have a featured artist and we hope that you can support them by tipping or purchasing merch!

Tonight w featured artist Georgie Jessup. The local music scene, otherwise so concerned with justice, has not done justice to Georgie Jessup – and though Georgie has been a stalwart member of the Washington DC-area singer/songwriter scene for decades, presenting socially conscious songs with a tongue-in-cheek humour and a technicolour country-western flair, she remains an under-known and under-celebrated name. In addition to being a PART of the local scene, she SUPPORTS the local scene with Edith May’s Paradise: her beautiful, off-beat basement venue hidden away in Jessup, MD, where she has given a home and a stage to local and not-so-local artists for nearly two decades.

Georgie Jessup’s songwriting is influenced by everything from old school country to Memphis R&B, placing her music firmly in the “cosmic” Americana Music genre. Her lyrics reflect her outspoken advocacy for animal rights, Native American issues, transgender rights and environmental sanity. “Georgie sings from the heart, like a rare flower in a wilderness,” says blues diva Candye Kane. “She speaks to us about the deepest issues. Issues that all of us should care about, but so many of us pretend don’t affect us.”

This is NOT a restaurant so bring your own food or drink if you want to eat or drink! We have a house keyboard, but it’s a small space, unable to support acts larger than a quartet, and no drumkits. 2 songs, 10 minutes, 1 pun – whichever’s shorter. We webcast Live on Facebook.com/robsopenmics, YouTube.com/robsopenmics and Twitch.tv/ilyaimy

The subject of an award winning documentary film, “Woman in A Man’s Suit,” Georgie also has six, well received, CDs available. “Georgie sings from the heart, like a rare flower in a wilderness,” says blues diva Candye Kane. “She speaks to us about the deepest issues. “A flock of flamingos delivered [Georgie’s] latest CD – which lit up my abode like Yellowstone National Park with all the bears on fire (cast a whole new light on Smokey, doesn’t it?).” says Legendary award-winning American novelist – Tom Robbins. “[She] continues to make thrilling music. I strongly suspect that there are secret planets on which [Georgie] and her songs are more popular than sex.”
